A Pleasant Beginning to the Season.
Sunday 26 September dawned bright and
clear. The patches of spring snow sparkled high on Banks Peninsula as the hardy
southern H28 crews gathered for their first outing of the season. Lady Helen
(David Grant), Midas (Guy and Barbara Carnaby), Sabina (Mike Scott) and
Trailblazer (Walter Savage) assembled at the Eastern Light all ready to go but
there was no wind.
It was decided to motor on the intended
course and within 5 minutes a light NE breeze had begun. With boat speeds
through the water in the range of 0.6kts to 1.9kts there was some exciting
“racing”. However the incoming tide meant that little progress was made.
Soon a superior tactical move by Midas saw them open up a very large lead.
The breeze progressively increased and
there was some pleasantly relaxed sailing. BUT lunch time approached so it was
decided to change the venue to Pile Bay.
The lead that Midas had built up was of no
advantage as they did not have their radio on!!!!!! and didn’t know of the
course change. The change of venue sadly meant that Solitude II (Arthur &
Sandra Inns) was unable to join us for the lunch-time raft-up. The day concluded
about 2pm with boats taking off for another sail.
Overall a pleasant beginning to the season.
